Alzheimer's/Dementia

Our music therapist are trained to work with individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other diseases that are accompanied with symptoms of dementia.  It has been scientifically proven that music is stored in all areas of our brain. This is what makes music therapy an essential outlet for those living with dementia. Our music therapist offers support to our client/patients by utilizing music to address a variety of things that help increase their overall quality of life.

The following is a list from the American Music Therapy Association providing evidenced-based outcomes of music therapy interventions with individuals with Alzheimer's and other dementia-related diseases:

  • Memory recall which contributes to reminiscence and satisfaction with life

  • Positive changes in mood and emotional states

  • A sense of control over life through successful experiences

  • Anxiety and stress reduction for older adult and caregiver

  • Nonpharmacological management of pain and discomfort

  • Stimulation which provokes interest even when no other approach is effective

  • Emotional intimacy when spouses and families share creative music experiences

  • Social interaction with caregivers and families

  • Awareness of self and environment which accompanies increased attention to music

  • A structure which promotes rhythmic and continuous movement or vocal fluency as an adjunct to physical rehabilitation
